Gotta Water Those Plants
0.75” wrapped canvas
This little girl, a beloved member of our extended family, is attempting to water the tomato and cucumber plants that her mom is planting in the garden. The care and concern that she focuses on the plants is shown in her body language. She is working so hard to hold the heavy watering can, with her toes scrunched and her knees bent, BUT then the water totally misses the plants! 🙂
There were a number of artistic challenges in doing this painting. Some of the technical aspects that were not easy to depict were the chiaroscuro (contrast of light and shade), the foreshortening of the legs and body, and the perspective implied by the grass and the pots. These challenges were also rewarding in the end, as they all seemed to fall into place, like pieces in a puzzle.
