Prior to starting this painting, I became aware that the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was using the orchid as a symbol of hope in some of their campaigns. For me, the orchid was a flower I just loved for its’ elegance, simplicity, and color, but it took on a new meaning for me as I started the painting. While I labored lovingly on the drawing, the orchid also came to represent hope for me, but a more generic sort of hope that can apply to situations other than cancer. Hope is something we all need in our lives, and it can be helpful in many different situations or circumstances depending on what is happening in an individual’s life.
