A few years ago we went on vacation to Vancouver Island, and one morning went for a short hike beside a little river near Parksville. It was a beautiful clear morning, and the water of the river ran quietly and was crystal clear. The sun dappled peacefully through the leaves and branches of the trees. In this painting, I tried to capture this feeling of peace and serenity by the dramatic use of light and shadow, and by trying to capture the clarity and stillness of the running water.

As I worked on this painting, I had a sense of the forest being timeless, and that the trees are peaceful beings.  However, I also had a sense that we, as humans, need to take care of our earth, or these peace-loving trees will not survive.
